I have looked in to Apple TV and Fire Cube but both seem to have limitations as far as the way they handle audio codecs or dolby vision. I had been patiently waiting for Nvidia to release a new shieldtv model, but with another CES gone by without an announcement I have mostly given up on that. Nor does it support Atmos in Netflix so I end up having to switch to the built in TV app.
Everything pretty much works flawlessly but more and more media is coming out in Dolby Vision which it does not support. I don't actually stream any media from it, it's plugged directly in to my AVR and an external USB drive and I use it to play 4k blu ray rips. I have an old Nvidia shield 2017 that has been working great as my Plex server for years.
